Does the thought of skydiving adventures make you queasy or thrill you to no end? Maybe it does both.

The thought of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane in a non-emergency situation doesn’t make much sense to many people, but the dream of ‘flying’ through the air is a fantasy come true for most of us.

Imagine experiencing the sensations of flight as you soar high above picturesque landscapes with the rushing wind pressing against your body.

You’re free!

You can turn this way and that, tumble and roll and even the law of gravity seems to have been suspended, if only for a minute.

The ground now seems to be coming at you faster and faster so you deploy your parachute and BOOM, you’re shocked back into reality, and it feels like you’re coming to a stop.

However, the fun just keeps coming as you glide safely to earth with incredible aerial views in all directions.

Risk Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ – 4 adventure travel stars

Yes, hurling yourself out of an airplane, and falling to the ground at speeds in excess of 100 mph has its risks, however, it’s probably not as dangerous as you may think. With the safety gear and procedures used these days serious injuries are rare.

For instance, most skydivers in the western world are required to wear a backup chute and some who are really safety conscious use an automatic activation device that opens their reserve parachute at a safe altitude should the main parachute not open for whatever reason.

Serious injuries do happen, and it’s usually due to errors in judgment or because the skydiver tried something foolish.

When it comes to canopy collisions and getting tangled up with another skydiver, or the rare equipment malfunction, that’s where your backup parachute is going to be your best friend.

The uncontrollable risks are something a skydiver needs to be trained to handle (like changing wind conditions), however, good training and good judgment will significantly reduce the risk factor for any skydiver, and those are two things are within your control.

The risks certainly increase for those looking to take it to the next level like BASE jumping, sky surfing and wing suit flying. Only those with a lot of experience should attempt these kinds of skydiving adventures.

Skill & Physical Factors
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ – 4 adventure travel stars

If you’re going on a tandem jump you don’t have to worry about the skill level too much because you’ll get some quick training and then the expert attached to your backside will take care of the technical stuff.

However, if you decide you want to take up this heart-pounding adventure favorite for yourself then you’re going to need plenty of skill to do it safely.

You’ll need to learn the proper technique for exiting the aircraft, how to deploy the parachute, how to maneuver the parachute and how to land.

And if you want to go skydiving a second time, you need to make sure you know how to secure the parachute properly to your body.

As far as the physical factors go, you should be in good shape and under 250 pounds, generally speaking.

And being an athletic person is a big plus. If you’re well over 200 pounds and look like a couch potato then you may have difficulty finding a place that will let you jump regardless of any waivers you may sign.

Fun Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ – 5 adventure travel stars

You may be falling to the ground at ever increasing speeds, but skydiving can make you feel like you’re flying. And that’s a kind of freedom that few will ever experience.

You may have seen the video clips on YouTube of the daredevils who don their wing suits and ‘fly’ within a few feet of the ground at times or maybe the people who surf the air or take their kayak for a dive and a watery landing. Now that’s got to be a huge adrenaline rush.

If you want to test skydiving adventures before doing on your own then try a tandem jump. After that chances are good that you’ll want to go it alone the next time out.

There seems to be no end to the things you can do to turn your skydiving experience up a notch. It would appear that you’re only limited by your imagination… and gravity.

As far as the fun factor is concerned, this is definitely a five-star adventure travel experience if ever there was one.
