Bungee jumping
Taking the plunge

Okay, you’ve decided that you want to give bungee jumping a try and now you stand on the ledge mesmerized by the view, and it’s a long way down.

You hear the countdown, lean forward and as you fall it feels like your stomach left you at the platform.

The wind roars, the speed increases, the ground surges ever closer and then all of a sudden you’re being yanked back into the sky only to fall again to a lesser extent… over and over.

Then you get reeled in like a fish or lowered gently to the ground. Congratulations! You’re now an official member of the bungee jumping club.

It’s a rush, it’s exciting and it makes for a good story to tell your friends, but it’s going to put stress on both your body and mind. Be prepared for that.

Risk Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ – 4 adventure travel stars

There are no two ways about it. Bungee jumping has its share of associated risks, even when the jump goes according to plan.

If the equipment isn’t maintained properly you could be in for some very serious trouble. I don’t think I need to elaborate on that, but when the jump goes well you can still face quite a few physical problems.

One risk has to do with eye trauma that can result in vision problems. You can also suffer back and leg injuries from the abrupt deceleration and then being jerked back up into the air.

The higher you go, and the more speed you have when getting yanked around, the more possibility of physical damage. You can be smart and take all the precautions, but you can never eliminate all of the risks.

Skill & Physical Factors
Rating: ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ – 2 adventure travel stars

As far as the skills are concerned, just make sure you go to a reputable bungee jump operator, get some training and then follow their instruction.

And if you have a choice, start with an easy jump before going on anything extreme.

It’s always a good idea to keep yourself in good physical shape, especially if you’re into the more risky adventure travel endeavors, and that would certainly apply to bungee jumping.

If you’re in poor physical condition then you might want to pass on bungee jumping. Getting jerked around like you will with bungee jumping can stretch (or possibly tear) something in your body.

Some bungee jumping adventures are more extreme than others, so chances are you’ll be able to find one that’s a good fit for your physical condition.

Fun Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ – 4 adventure travel stars

You can jump off tall buildings, bridges, over deep river gorges, out of helicopters and other extreme jump sites as well. You can even reverse bungee jump where they catapult you into the air from the ground.

Different bungee jumping locations offer all kinds of variations for an incredible number of thrills. It would seem that you’re only limited by your imagination.

The adrenaline will be free flowing from the time you’ve realized you’re committed to the jump until long after you’ve unhooked yourself from that long elastic life line. Make sure you’re fastened tight because you’re in for one heck of a ride.
